Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
